Great piece.

I have found that the recumbent bikes with full clear plastic shields and several flags on tall whips are much more visible. The windshields reflect the surrounding traffic and weather and the flags tend to move a great deal which attract attention, especially when they and their whips are bright orange. Nightime seems to be a problem, though.

My brother used a flag for a while on his bent, and felt it bought him more space from motorists; it advertises vulnerability, which I recommend (see A1009144). I rely on being as tall as a car, and still sufficiently unusual-looking to wake a drowsy motorist's attention.

I felt that his flag slowed him down, like a sea-anchor, by adding air resistance. No wave without drag.

I am well festooned with reflective bands and bright flashing lights at night. My brother wears a hi-viz yellow waistcoat (as seen on road repairmen) also festooned with reflective stuff.
