How to eat Curry properly
RiffRaff Posted Jun 29, 1999
This brings up a point I've been curious about for a while: should a left-handed person suffer the trouble
of using only his right hand to eat, to keep in tradition, or should he use his left hand, casually explaining
to his hosts that he uses the 'wrong' hand to wipe with?
Yes,Brass

Yup, The official Balti Dish (sometimes called a korai) is made of brass, and used on everyday occasions. Some families also have silver korai's used for special occasions (source: The Eastern Cook Book author Charmaine Solomon, i think)

I've seen iron ones, and copper I would have believed, but I have never even heard anyoner mention brass ones until now. All the Birmingham baltis I ever had came in iron dishes.

This is all very well, but tearing a naan with one hand is a tricky one.

This should explain why Baltis are more expensive than yer normal common or garden Rogan Josh et al. However, unless the proprieter of your local takeaway Indian culinary delights specialist is prepared to donate the korai to your collection of home based cooking/eating utensils, by your definition it is impossible to supply you with a takeaway balti, without infringing the Sale of Goods Act (re.: misrepresentation)

I've often wondered why naan bread is pronounced similarly to non-bread. My question is answered.

I suppose you could hold it in your left hand, then make as if to throw it, but hold onto it. The extreme forces to which the naan would be exposed would cause it to rip itself apart. Uh, one problem is then you have to get out of your seat to go and fetch the half-naan which is on the other side of the room.

But don't drink water as most curry Virgins do as this will not cool it down but merely make it appear hotter. If you think you are hard enough pop up to "Mo's" in Upper Bangor and order a "phal" Deifnitely an "Andrex in the Fridge" event!!

Yais, I have heard that milk makes an ideal accompaniment to the curry. Unless you actually *want* it to be hotter.
I personally enjoy making my own curries. Okay, I open a jar of Sharwood's. But it is the same thing!

Yup, thats certainly true because the stuff that makes curry hot is the acid in the chillies(if used). This is non soluble, so drinking water only serves to spread acid over your entire tongue. Best to absorb the acid with bread or yoghurt.

A "Balti" is a bucket - a pail, if you will - and noone on the Indian subcontinent would cook in one. Or eat one.

Or you could all sod off to Maccy D's and whine about there being a tiny sliver of gherkin in your burger.

For some reason, if you go into MacDonalds and plonk the syllable "Mac" onto the beginning of every word, they go macMental...
"MacHi. I would like a MacBig Mac MacMeal. MacThanks."
Hypocrites...

well...it's not ACID but rather an acidic, oily goo of capsicum compounds coating your throat (capsicums = the hot chemicals that give peppers their heat, i'm an American chem major so excuse any inconsistencies), so that's why water spreads them around your throat. milk helps b/c it has some detergents in it that wash the capsicum compunds from your throat and bread just absorbs the oil...not correcting, just adding on...enjoy the curry and eat some bread if it bugs ya!
