Skem's reputation
TheDepressedYak Started conversation May 17, 2004
The wonderful reputation of Skelemersdale is spreading it's tentacles outwards. I live in Upholland, about 3 miles away on the way to Wigan if you take the scenic route, and to Wiganers I am apparently from the "the posh part of Skem" whereas to people in Skem I'm from "the posh bit of Wigan". Although the very bottom end of Upholland is part of the road naming system (alphabetical order), they still are separate entities. The biggest connection is that when the police are having a crack down in skem, the telephone boxes near mine have all their glass smashed, but that's another issue.
There isn't really any point to this post, because the association doesn't bother me very much. I think it's a very good entry, the only thing that's missing is something about the new 'cultural' sculptures (or metal monstrosities) that have appeared around the town - well, on the roundabouts - in recent years. The best story I heard about them was about one with pictures of various Skelmersdale residents on them. The police realised after a few weeks that one depicted one of the town's most active criminals, so the whole exhibit had to be changed. I can't vouch for the accuracy of that story though.

Hey, Don't worry I grew up there and it still took me ages to learn to spell it. Something to do with the l I think.
The aformentioned monstrosites hadn't been built when I wrote the entry. I should also mention that it's no 48 in the book of c**p towns.

Firstly the words Skem and Reputation are two that should never be put in the same sentance. I was once a well known resident of this black-whole of a town and like many have managed to escape. For young people there is nothing to do except hanging around sub-ways intimidating people, nicking motor-bikes or running around 'The Connie' With their Burberry shirts La coste trackie bottoms and rockports.
The place needs completley knocking down and re thought with better transport links, things for kids to do, an actual town centre instead of a dated building full of 13 year old mums and wanna be gangsta's.
If you think this is harsh you should try living there and then tell me I am wrong!!!!

Hi Fee
I'm really glad that you've not found Skem that bad to live in. I'm from Skem (Ashurst) and when I was 16 it was hell on earth! There were no jobs, and it just felt like a dead end town. But that was nearly 15 years ago!
When I go back it always seems a lot better than when I left it.
Welcome to h2g2..
