Yes, a very interesting and well written article. Checking out their personal spaces I see that the two authors are medics. Until they stop by to answer your question in more detail, here's a basic answer.

Aspirin makes our blood platelets less "sticky" so we are less likely to have a blood clot. A heart attack is caused by a blood clot getting stuck in a cardiac artery, depriving the heart muscle of blood. Hence, if we can reduce the likelihood of clots, we can reduce the likelihood of a heart attack.

We are also advised to take small amounts of Aspirin when taking long-haul flights to combat the possibility of deep vein thrombosis.
