An ornithologist I follow on social media refers to the Christmas-card time as 'gay Cardinals season'. Cards, wrapping paper, and other holiday paraphernalia usually feature two red Cardinals, which. . . yep. Here is a real-life heterosexual couple in my neighbour's bushes.
I checked with the ornithologist. She gave me a link to a scientific paper. No, they don't usually go in for thruples. (But I did ask.)
