Drake's Well
Drake's well went into operation in this remote Pennsylvania location in 1859 – and changed life as they knew it. 'Mineral oil' began to replace whale oil as a fuel, much to the relief of the whales and the chagrin of Nantucket. Titusville, Pennsylvania, became the epicentre of a brief but exciting oil boom. Which accounts for the picturesque towns around here. Some have 'opera houses' and such, which seems a bit odd next to the Amish buggies.
