I guess a quilt is technically a blanket.
But not all blankets are quilts.
At one time, most families had someone adept at making quilts.

That's interesting - I call this a blanket because, even though it is a patchwork of squares, it is only big enough to cover a person's legs or shoulders. I use the word 'quilt' to describe a patchwork that is big enough to cover a bed.
I did help to make a comfort quilt for an elderly neighbour a few years ago - she lived in sheltered accommodation and slept in a reclining chair, so the woollen squares were just the right thickness for a summer covering. She really enjoyed exploring the different colours and textures, and was particularly fascinated by the way the fluorescent orange square glistened in the sunlight

Thanks for explaining.
There may be a separate word for a blanket that's only big enough to cover the shoulders.
probably a throw

I really did not go into this intending to correct you. It is certainly a blanket. But it's nice to have more words than just blanket, and we have both learned something here. Everyone wins!
