Fifty years ago, US cities experienced rioting in the aftermath of the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, in Memphis, Tennessee. In Washington, DC, the riots lasted for six days. They ended after President Lyndon B Johnson appealed to citizens to honour the memory of Dr King, sent in the National Guard to restore order, and promised to pass a fair housing law. (He kept the promise.) Issues surrounding equality and the controversial Vietnam War (which Dr King opposed) contributed to an unease across America at the time, well summed up in the words of the song 'For What It's Worth':
There's somethin' happenin' here,
What it is, ain't exactly clear,
There's a man with a gun over there
Tellin' me I got to beware…
