A Conversation for Irish Round Towers

Steeples and Minarets

Post 1

ITIWBS

Steeples and Minarets were originally watchtowers, but over time have become features more symbolic than practical.

Other functions include use as signaling platforms, of which bells are a survival.

The watch tower as such was as much for watching affairs within the given community as watching for approaching strangers.

The traditional appointment of blind muzzeins to make the call to prayer from minarets was a fundamentalist reaction against domestic application of a watch tower.
