Oddities of the Week - Fashion (Mis)statements
Created | Updated Oct 13, 2013
This week's Oddity gives new meaning to the term 'leisure wear'.
How to Draw a Crowd
This week, we have a double Oddity. It's all about fashion, you see. What it reveals, what it conceals – and what it does to the one you're trying to attract. (Note our lack of gender bias, here.)
Consider these two cases. Would you like to add any of these to your personal wardrobe?
From 1910 | From 1942 |
What the Library of Congress says: Illustration shows an attractive woman playing billiards surrounded by four dashing men offering her advice on how to approach a bridge shot. | |
What the Library of Congress says: Detroit, Michigan. Jitterbug dancing as part of the entertainment at a scrap salvage rally sponsored by the Work Projects Administration (WPA) at the state fairgrounds. |
What can we say? Obviously, in 1910, that babe was hot. The guys, apparently, were the Brad Pitts and Tom Cruises of their day. De gustibus, yadda, yadda. Frankly, we're not sure how they managed to sink the eight ball wearing those deadly collars. Turn your head too fast, and you could pass out. Obviously, it was worth it. You got to hang around the supermodels.
At least those people were paying for their own debauchery. The 1942 picture shows the scandalous activity of jitterbugging. There's way too much of that young lady on display, there. Somebody call the League of Decency. But wait! This was a WPA dance? The GOVERNMENT was footing the bill for all that shakin' goin' on? Mercy! Oh, well. There's a war on, and all.
