Warren Buffet is buying newspapers with a sensible online/print strategy here in the states. In fact, he (and I) would argue that the newspaper is the only place to find local news about the town council, local school, and the lady down the road's prize flowers.

As a former weekly paper editor, my focus was to be relentlessly local and our paper did quite well at the turn of the century. Many weekly papers continue to thrive because they've retained that local focus and not tried to be everything to everyone like the big dailies.

Wonderful entry though. Just that line at the end broke my heart a bit.

This was an off-shoot of my Entry 'Extra-Extra...' A87793825

I had included a brief description of the printing process to help explain the disruption caused by printing an 'Extra' edition. While this was in Peer Review I found several Researchers who wanted to know more about publishing, so I split it into two Entries.

Nothing could make me happier than to find my final thought incorrect - well almost nothing, I would prefer to win the Lotto

We have a weekly paper in our town that charges nothing to its readers, makes all it's funds by paid ads and we expect that as long as the editor doesn't grow to old or retire the paper will continue to appear in stores and restaurants where they are snapped up by eager readers.

I don't know anything about their financial situation, but I have a subscription of our local newspaper - where else would I get to know what's happening in the vicinity?
