Oddity of the Week: The Game's Afoot

This Oddity reminds us that some heroes never die.

The Game's Afoot

We're sure you're remembering to check Create, and getting your costumes ready for the big mystery evening on 28 October. Mystery is the theme of the evening.

Sherlock Holmes is synonymous with mystery. The first person to play the great detective on the stage, of course, was the US actor William Gillette. Gillette was very successful in this role.

The story goes that Gillette asked Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, 'Can I marry Holmes?', to which Doyle replied, 'Marry him, kill him off, do whatever you like with him.' So much for artistic purity.

We agree that Gillette didn't look much like Jonny Lee Miller or that fellow one Researcher refers to as 'Benedict Cummerbund', but he'll do.

He'd probably have fainted dead away if he'd seen Sherlock, though. Or the tattoos on Miller in Elementary.
