Hi, just want to say congratulations on getting this piece into the Edited Guide! The whole deal with 'fakelore' and how it might be abused by commercial concerns is quite interesting.

You know, I didn't know old Joe was made-up until I started researching this one. I grew up reading all that stuff in school in Pittsburgh.

I've heard that Paul Bunyan was invented in New York by a journalist.

That could be, Gnomon. What I read was that the loggers had a lot of geek jokes going, and somebody cleaned their stories up and took out some of the technobabble.
