Hmmmm... to me the 'a' in these two words don't sound the same... although I must say I have difficulties thinking of a good way to describe it better myself... maybe like in 'noooothing' the way Manuel in Fawlty Towers pronounces it when he says 'I know noooothing!'

Possibly, the vowel sound in _mark_, _barge_ etc. comes closer in some accents. In standard British English, this ought to be the same as _father_, though. I believe that a really 'posh' pronunciation of either (think Lady Thatcher) comes fairly close to how I say _Vater_.
On the whole, this does not seem to be one of the more problematic sounds, but then I am German, so I wouldn't REALLY know...

The "V" in the German language is pronounced like a "F" and the "t" like a "d".
All very complicated, Basil !!
