Bowness on Solway is guarded by a fort located at Bowness (Maia). This is the most westerly of the forts on Hadrian's Wall. A possible anchorage for ships has been recorded in the area.

It is probable that the fort at Bowness operated a system of mutual support with Kirkbride (Portus Trucculensis), the other base on the Solway Firth. This installation was large enough to be a base, and was large enough to provide a possible base or anchorage for ships supporting any advance north of Hadrian's Wall.

Kirkbride (Portus Trucculensis), was a second base in the area close enough to support Bowness and provide security in its own locality and protect travelers.smiley - smiley
