My best advice usually is to not buy anything until you've looked all around your nearest shops, and compare all the prices. Its always a good idea to get to the shops as early in the day (as well as the month) as possible, then you'll have enough time to plan what to buy. Thats what I usually do.
Though if you want to live dangerously give them the money and tell them they can get it cheaper in the January sales. It actually makes sense, but be prepared to duck anyway
