Staple in so many parts of the world, and with good reason too. It's relatively cheap and a little goes a long, long way.
For example, I had half a dozen sausages in the fridge. Usually that's enough for two, maybe three meals (a couple of snags, some bread and chips usually), but I was feeling adventurous and instead cooked them and chopped them up into a few dozen pieces, threw them in a pot with some frozen veg, curry powder, soy sauce, pasta sauce, rice and water, thinking to make a stew to last me a couple of days. Unfortunately (or fortunately ^.^) I grossly overestimated how much raw rice I needed, and ended up with enough stew to last approximately eight to ten meals when divided up and stuck in the fridge and freezer.
