I´m afraid the article is incorrect in as much as Harringay was part of the Municipal Borough Of Tottenham and not part of Hornsey as stated. The Boundary ran close to Green Lanes at the southern most of the "Ladder" streets but veered more westerly further north.

Are you sure? I got my info from a history book in Wood Green library... and just tried to double-check it on the Internet and turned up this page here:

Which says:
"Hornsey became a U.D. under the Local Government Act, 1894, and was divided into the 8 wards of Highgate, Muswell Hill, Crouch End, Hornsey (divided in 1903), (fn. 51) North and South Harringay, Stroud Green, and Finsbury Park, each with 3 members. (fn. 52)"

It doesn't say where the boundaries of North or South Harringay wards were, though. I'm willing to be corrected on this.

Yes I am VERY sure. The Border used to be easily seen, as Tottenham lamp standards were different to the Hornsey ones. I grew up in one of the "Gardens" and went to a "Tottenham" school. The width of the wedge of "Tottenham" land, east of Green Lanes was as wide as Duckett's Common At the Turnpike Lane end of the "Ladder" streets which was in the "Municipal Borough of Tottenham".

While writing this, I'm trying to think were I can get visual confirmation of this. I'll get back to you.

We'll have to see about updating the entry, in that case. There are one or two things that need tightening up anyway - I wrote it while the old Homebase was there, and they've since knocked that down and built the retail part.

Which of the Gardens did you live on? I moved to Somerset this summer, but before that I lived in Harringay for six years on and off - had a flat on Kimberley Gardens and lived in a house on Stanhope Gardens...

I lived in Warwick Gardens, but it's a long time ago. I now live in Berlin, Germany. I did go back and look at the area in 2000.

Regarding the "Piccadilly Line Underground Station" The station at the Salisbury, to be called St Ann's Rd, was seriously considered in the Piccadilly Line extension proposals, but Frank Pick, who was mostly responsible for London Transport's now World Famous "House Style", decided the area was well enough served with trams and buses and the station was never built.

I lived in Umfreville Road from 1949 until 69. The bottom two houses on the left had side (even number) as you looked down towards Green Lanes were in Tottenham Borough Council and this was denoted by a thin strip of paving tiles in the paving stones of the pavement the same were on the opposite pavement but included about four houses. This was explained by my father who had lived 1st in Whiteman Road above the butchers and then in Umfreville for the rest of his life. The Tottenham dust cart use to collect from these few houses drive up Umfreville Road down Burgeon road to collect from the lower house's. The amount of houses collected from increasing with each road.This continued until after the formation of the London Borough of Harringey.
