A Conversation for The Dangers of Mixing Bleach and Ammonia
Bleach and vinegar
elgordoloco Started conversation Feb 19, 2006
I read in the local paper that if one adds a cup of bleach to a gallon of water and then adds a cup of vinegar, that this will be a much more effective disinfectant than bleach alons. It says this mixture is unstable and cannot be stored.
Either my chemistry is rusty or I am having a senior moment, but I cannot figure out the results of this mixture. My gut feeling is that it will generate chorine gas.
Any help on this mystery?

As other people have said, don't mix bleach with anything unless you fully understand exactly what reactions are happening and that all the products are safe.
