Well done, GB! A jolly good subject and a nice bite-size piece to read in my lunch-hour.
Your list of cover artists is most impressive. Once I heard a cover of it by some old crooner. The only one you mention is Johnny Mathis, but the voice I remember was deeper than his. Perry Como or Pat Boon?

Hi TC
Thanks for reading!
My list is by no means exhaustive, I tried to mention some obscure as well as the well-known artists. I can't find a version by Pat Boone or Perry Como but I wonder if you mean the version by Johnny Cash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdSIlVZhsDw which does make him sound like an old crooner, and I don't really like it
If you were to pin me down to a favourite I'd have to say Roberta Flack's version, which literally makes me melt.

Just for you GB. I'd no idea it was originally a folk song, thank you
