A Conversation for Lonesome George

Ecuador and the Galapagos

Post 1

Lonesome George is gone, but the tourist trade in Galapagos souvenirs is still brisk, as is the penchant of Ecuadorans employed to service tourists on the island to keep dogs and cats and goats and what-have-you, which wreak havoc with the local fauna including the giant tortoises of which Lonesome George was only one.

Campaigns to put down wild goats and to poison rats and other feral animals which accompanied the Ecuadorans who now live there basically have not solved the problem which by treaty means they should all just leave, along with the tourist trade, and take all of their misbegotten mainland animals with them.
