"there is no sign of the physical and intellectual deterioration that has been evident in Hitchens during recent months."
Nonsense! Hitchens is simply not being a hypocrite, he is a staunch left-winger and defender of many of the traditional values of that creed, including the idea that ordinary people should be defended from extremism, murder excused by political ideology, and ends-justifies-the-means talk (reasons for his hatred of Kissinger). The 11th September attacks were attacks by reactionary extremists against civilians and Hitchens, like many intelligent and concience-driven left-wingers ignored the anti-American knee-jerk sentiments that followed and supported the United States response as, not American imperialism, but an attack on religious totalitarianism. He was absolutely correct.
