A Conversation for The Uses and Gratifications Model of the Media

Wants or Needs?

Post 1

The theory describes our relatioship with the one in terms of satisfaction of needs. But I would question that perhaps what are satisfied are merely our wants. This is especially true because the media are commercial and newspapers and television channels compete for our attention. Because of this even news programs will tend to give us the news that they think we will find most satisfying rather than that which is most useful or informative to us. This doesn't mean that we don't get bad news, but it does mean that the analysis of events is often one sided or that some events are under reported.

In short to compete for our attention the media will tell us what we want to hear, rather than what we need to.
