Britney and Kylie: the semiotics

Brilliant, Abi. It's a shame that so many people fail to understand the hidden depths of supposedly 'shallow' chart pop, and I'm glad that you have made the effort to decode Britney.

I myself am planning an entry exploring the subtext of the philosopher-poet Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'. I think it's obvious that the song deals with the way that brand images and advertising slogans are constantly drummed into us, so that - in a very real sense - we can't get them out of our heads. Kylie's spirited but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to escape from her shirt in the video clearly symbolises the difficulty of trying to break free from such conditioning. smiley - whistle

It is about time Kylie and Britney were deconstructed! Thanks for the comments Ormy - of all the people who could have read this, I am glad it was you!

I'm wondering whether my entry on the deconstruction of four specific Kylie tracks is worth it now. Ormy said everything I possibly could smiley - winkeye

These people may well have deep inner emotional thoughts but that's not what they are famous for and certainly not the image they push across. And do they actually write their songs? Overprotected is ridiculous! The girl is a pop star and that sort of life is definately not sheltered. How can we be expected to take these people seriously if they do not show us they can do more then sing a couple of songs and wear practically nothing in front of half the world!!!

Have to agree there folks. How can you deconstruct something that isnt there? What is Britney? A Corporate image, the all-American girl (maybe all too much...!), a microphone, a psuedo sex-symbol (she aint no Marilyn Monroe or Betty Page, is she?)...how can you deconstruct something that essentially isnt there? Everything mentioned (in the very-well written piece may I add!) doesnt exist! I obtained a very good quote from one Ms. Spears...*Its only music. It isnt what I feel* (Im paraphrasing a little I think!) Her music is written by underpaid musicians because record companies rarely sign anything but vacuous 5-minutes-of-famers, more than likely older males, that gets cut down and mass produced.

Deep and meaningful it aint.

Kylie however is a different kettle of fish. You only have to look at her mid-90's efforts to know that she's at least attempted to be an artist.

'It's all a pile of words'? I've often said something very similar about Britney's records. smiley - winkeye

Hmm.

Maybe it was something similar...perhaps a word beginning with *t*?

I don't know. My memory escapes me...
