Having been born and bred in Sheffield with over thirty years of inhabitance, I am ashamed to say I have never heard this story before.
My local history lessons at school concerned the Dale Dyke Dam Disaster and other local tragedies, but nothing as significant as this.
If it is correct that this story is taught in the area's schools today, my children certainly haven't told me about it, and I'm sure they would have done. Please, LEA, continue to teach this kind of thing to our children, as yet again we face the rising spectre of conflict in the Middle East - Lest We Forget.

Sho - employed again!

My grandad operated barrage balloons over Sheffield during the war, and told us many stories of that time.
This was one of them - although I'm ashamed to say that I've never been to the memorial.

Maybe next time I'm in Sheffleld.

thanks, Pinneped, this is excellent.
