I see that you're editing this one, and I want to give you a heads-up on a few changes I've made to the original.
I've replaced "defending" with "protecting" at the end of the first paragraph. I think it's more accurate.
In the second paragraph
"...but as there are few to no trees here,"
has been replaced by
"...but as the desert climate can only support a small number of somewhat stunted trees,".
I think that reads much better. In the same paragraph I've replaced
"...would simply lose all its moisture..."
with
"...would continuously lose moisture...".
The first statement just isn't true.
I've added the Latin name for the Gila Woodpecker, but there are many different species of desert owl in Sonora so it wouldn't be practical to the same for that.
