The last sentence in the USA section states that the US had "set its stall" as a superpower ... that's a new figure of speech for me (one of the American interlopers here on H2G2). My first thought was a typo, should be "set its sail", but that seems remote. So I checked my online dictionary and found:

4.Chiefly British. A seat in the front part of a theater.

That still seems a little remote, so maybe its just a simple reference to something like a booth at the market?
