A quick story of my own personal experiences with Hero Quest.
I love role-playing games! Especially free-form ones with no boards and minimal dice like the White Wolf series. (Changeling is the best, followed closely by Mage and Vampire with Werewolf, Mummy, and Wraith tying for *awful*!) However, my best friend at the time would never play these game with me. (She hated having to think up things to do and would rather constantly roll dice which was a pain for me, the GM.) My little brother and this best friend who rounded out our role playing table, were the same way. So when I saw a copy of Hero Quest at a garage sale for $1, I jumped at it.
They loved it and I quickly dispensed with the given maps and made up my own, more story driven quests complete with puzzles, item cards I made from computer paper, and the Monopoly cannon representing dwarven-made fire power!
However, another problem came up: My friends refused to lose! Everytime that they were on the verge of dying, they would demand a free life potion or spell or else they would quit. And because I had no other friends who would play *any* kind of RPG with me, I relented. Eventually, it became boring because there was no challenge for them and no reason to put an effort in for me. I did, however, write over 250 quests! (Sadly, they are no lost somewhere in my basement! )
I recently made some friends in college (I'm still in High School) who will play a real RPG with me, thank goodness, but Hero Quest will always have a fond place in my heart!
Thank you for bringing up some great memories!

You are not the only one. I loved Hero Quest, but since they stopped making it, I just started to collect Warhammer, sadly it's too complicated for me and I just settle for painting the models.
