I volunteer to help find the pubs.
Are you still in Lyon?
I've just moved here and want to meet English speakers.

Hi there,

Yup, I'm still in Lyon (and suffering from the heat at the moment!), sat in an office in the 6eme and chatting on h2g2 when I really aught to be working!

Welcome to both Lyon & H2G2 by the way.

First thing to do (on the site anyway) is to put something on your personal space... if you hit the "my space" button and then "edit page" and just put a brief introduction then people can come and leave you messages - for some obscure reason the software that runs this site doesn't let you post a message to a blank personal space smiley - erm

What brings you to Lyon anyway?

Don't you have A/C? I'm ok in the office. It's driving home that's the killer.

I moved here with company I work for. The've got offices all over Europe and as I'm on a grad training scheme they like me to move about a bit and I said I'd quite like to try a stint in France. So here I am. I work outside town in L'Isle D'Abeau.

What are you doing here?

I found the Smoking Dog on Saturday which was fun.

Thanks for the advice, I've updated my personal space now.

Air conditioning? What's that? smiley - yikes

Trouble is we're in a set of offices which hasn't got a/c, it'll cost over 200,000 francs to put in and we'll probably be moving office in around 18 months (this one's only rented), so it ain't worth it!

I've been out here since 1996, ran a restaurant till 2000 and am now working as a translator.

Lyon's not a bad place (at least it would be a nice place if it weren't for all the French around here smiley - tongueout).

As to pubs, personally I prefer either the Antidote or Johnny Walshes (out of Metro St. Jean, turn right) - they've quite often got reasonable live music on)

impressions about the article from an american living 13 years in lyon:

my first job here was as an english teacher, and i had mostly brit friends. the hang-out was the albion, and the barrel house didn't even exist.

nowadays i go out less (family man) and generally to the st. james. the albion seems much less anglophone nowadays.

there is an aussie place called "the down under" just up the hill from the opera, but i've never been. i've heard it's not very lively or particularly anglophone.

on trips i've eaten in o'gormans in lille & paris; lyon is probably identical, the guinness was excellent, the lunch is fine, but only if your company is paying.

Whisky

Hi there, I seem to remember that Australian bar... but I've only ever been in there once, and that was after quite a few too many drinks elsewhere so I can't remember a lot about it smiley - drunk

Made the mistake of wandering into the Antidote a couple of weeks ago on St. Patricks day... Took me 20 minutes to get the 2 metres from the door to the bar and by the time I got their I felt like a sardine!

O'Gormans in the Part Dieu seems to have changed names recently, but its still exactly the same inside, and the menu seems to be the same (I've also eaten in the Lille version waiting for the Eurostar).

Looking at your personal space I see we share another common interest... Whisky!
Have you run across the shop on Rue Ferrandiere in your time here - a real whisky lover's paradise! (Although I don't think I've been in there in over two years now smiley - yikes - I must be slowing down in my old age!

riotact : like a phoenix from the ashes

hello! someone who knows what's important in life... capital, capital.

I don't get too exotic in whisky tastes... my favorite is good old 10 yr old laphroaig; generally keep a bottle of the balvenie doublewood at home too; the laphroaig is a bit much for the average frenchman. this xmas though, my father-in-law gave me a bottle of 16 yr old aberlour (pricey), the same 2-cask idea but 4 more years (some will stop at nothing!)... last whisky word, grant's came out with a sherry cask whisky that was only about 12€... but i can't find it anymore... good thing probably because at half the price i would probably end up drinking twice as much smiley - drunk
