Very good entry

I had never thought to do an entry on a childrens picture book creator, but this is a very good addition to h2g2 for a wonderful illustrator. I didn't know any of the biographical information on Base, so that was fun. I had purchased all of his books long before I had kids and love his work. Hopefully your entry will encourage a few more h2g2 researchers to pick up some of Base's books! They will be richly rewarded by the experience!

More then one swastika!

Something that has recently come to my attention is that there is not just one, but two swatikas in Graeme Base's book Animalia. The one on the S page has already been called to attention, but what about the one on the N page? There's a swastika just below the newt's boat in the water. This swastika most likely stands for Nazi. Also, I found it really odd that in his bio picture in the back sleeve shows him with dark hair, while him as a little boy seems to have blonde hair. The eye colour is not completly visible, but there's a possibility its blonde(Aryan anyone?).
Most likely this is not the place to take up this topic, but I can't find anywhere else that even seems to to have people interested.
More then anything else, I would like to know why an artist and writer that I have admired since I first read his books seems to be promoting swastikas in some way.

The swastika has a history dating back to 4000BC and it was only in the 20th Century that the Buddhists (who use the swastika to represent unity) decided to use the left rather than right facing swastika because of the confusion with naziism. You can look it up on wikipedia if you are interested to find out more. As to whether Graeme Base has nazi tendencies because he has used the symbol twice in his book, you could probably hurl any number of accusations against the poor guy if you tried hard enough.
