Yes, totally an aside.
Terry Pratchett's novel 'Reaperman' includes as a main plot thread the birth of a shopping mall, and makes it out to be a parasite which draws life from the city centre, thus killing the city.
I have to say I thought the comparison was pretty sound, and I'm sure there are some central-city shop keepers who would be inclined to agree.
