I remember my Grandad (who was born in 1889) extolling the virtues of George Formby snr. Whenever George Formby, son, was mentioned he would say "Eeee, 'eys norras gud as 'is fayther" and proceed to tell us one of the senior GF's jokes...
Q. Can yer run putty rahnd a winder?
A. Ar, an' I can run Putty's fayther rahnd a 9-inch gas-pipe.
And then collapse laughing at the joke.
We could never see the funny side of this joke, but it became one of those "family" things that we all still laugh hysterically at, and no-one else understands.
