A Conversation for The Moscow Metro

suburbs?

a great entry, really. the only realy gripe i have is calling anything outside the garden ring "the suburbs". i mean, is brooklyn a suburb of nyc? the moscow 'burbs are not served by the subway, and areas outside the garden ring, but inside the outer ring, have urban residences, offices, etc. not that it's such a big deal, i just certainly dont think that i live in the suburbs smiley - winkeye
have you heard that they are starting two more metros? not lines, actual seperate entities. there's going to be a "mini-metro" and an elevated one. oh, and by the end of the summer, the station on the river near sparrow hills (red line, between sportivnaya and universitet) is to finally re-open after 20 years!

Well I must say that I do have a tendency to define everything that is 'not the centre' as the suburbs. This isn't right? I dunno, small town upbringing, what can I say?

I was jkust reading about the grand reopening. And how exciting, about ther others. Details please! smiley - smiley I hope these plans are going to include the outer circle line they've been promising us for so long...

No cyrillic. Not even in guide entries. Very sad.

And in answer to your question: I don't know. Is Brooklyn a suburb of NYC? Geography, never my strong point. smiley - winkeye

No, Bklyn is not a suburb. It's a borough (big district), of NYC. Only when you get to the end of brooklyn is there a sign telling you that you're leaving the city, and entering Long Island *shudders*. I suppose I'm being nit-picking, but suburbs as far as i know refers to outside the city limits: "zagorod". enough of that.
I havent heard anything about an outer ring metro. I wouldnt hold my breath. But as for the others, there is certainly work happening around park pobedy and further west from there, so the mini-metro thing might actually happen. hopefully by that time i wont be living there anymore...
now i'm concerned that the grand reopening might not be imminent- they're shut down the line, but they're not giving an opening date smiley - sadface oh well.

Outside the city limits? Well, that's not how I think about them at all. Deary me. I'd call that the outskirts. Maybe it's a Br English Am English thing? I may go and ask h2g2 now. I'm mildly intreigued.

Oh well, if they've started groundbreaking, it must be true smiley - smiley But I can't say I am holding my breath for the outer circle line, though it is one of my more pleasent fantasies...

hi there, just checking in to see what's been happening... i have been unconnected due to starting a
new job and not having any time for (relatively) idle surfing. they still have not said when that station is going
to open smiley - sadface i got a great view of it though, from a river boat. it does look like they're making progress.
so, do you have any suggestions for cheap and not sleazy summer dining/entertainment? i have only one
expat friend, and we're bored silly. the beer festival was briefly entertaining, but now it's over... take it easy

Well, I did ask, and personally, I think that there must be a Br/ Am difference here, as the americans seemed to agree with you, while the Brits were more using my definition. Anyway.

Not sure about non sleazy entertainment. I don't get out much smiley - smiley Especially as I got married recently amd I'm knackered and distinctly lacking in the will to do anything at all except veg out... Anyway, it's too hot!

oh, congrats.
yeah, we (BF and I) dont get out much, mostly because of budget concerns, but also
cause we dont have a lot of common friends (language issue). I am just soooo
excited: i am going to norway on sunday for a short vacation. beach, sun, no
babushki trying to push me under the wheels of the bus.... FYI, there is a cool
reggae festival tonight (thursday) at tochka, which i will unfortunately not
make it too smiley - sadface

Hope you enjoyed Norway! Hope you're still there, actually, for your sake, with the smoke drifting over the city...

yeah, the smoke was pretty awful, from the pictures i saw. i missed the experience
myself, but i'm back in town now. Norway was awesome (though horrifficly expensive)
and I wish I could have stayed longer. Not too long though, 'cause it's all so
clean and normal that it's SCARY. I mean, I felt bad throwing my cigarette
butts on the ground. Cars and even trams stopped and let me cross, in the MIDDLE
of the block. I was so confused. People at the busstop offered my change after
they saw me looking confusedly at a map and digging through my pockets.
Possibly the wierdest part was how when I landed at Sheremetyevo, as I
elbowed my way through the rabid taxi drivers and emerged into the cloud o
car exhaust, I kept thinking, "It's so nice to be home."

Felt the same when I got back from America. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there smiley - winkeye
