A Conversation for The Abdication of King Edward VIII of England and the Effect on the British Royal Family
De Valera and Ireland

Eamonn de Valera used the abdication to pick apart the Anglo-Irish Treaty which had followed the War of Independence. One of the clauses was an oath of loyalty to the Crown. de Valera now claimed that the Crown was no longer legitimate; this wasn't the Crown *he* had sworn to. And so the oath was dropped, to everyones relief. It was just empty words, as they all acknowledged, but it made them uncomfortable.
Another way in which Dev rubbished the Treaty was in appointing a lowly butcher as the British representative in Ireland. He then proceeded to shun and humiliate the man, generally treating him like a little b***h.
