Is this really forbidden?

I think it depends on which college, who happens to be in charge at the time etc. etc. Nowadays, the reason is sometimes given as one of fire safety - they have to know how many people are in the building in case it burns down. Whether you believe that is up to you
And it's been a few years since I was there, so it may all have changed... but I doubt it - Cambridge just doesn't move that fast!

I think it's the other way round. I am convinced that Corpus set off the occasional fire alarm so that they could catch non-Corpuscles spending the night!

The rule isn't no overnighting, just declare occupancy.
They just want to know if you're gay or not. Only kidding. It's the fire thing.
