Picking sloes

Hi
Can you help with this sloe question?
I found some sloes today and picked them thinking they were ripe - they were purple and dusty looking.
I have _now_ read that you shouldn't pick them until September or October! Will it make much difference do you think?
I would appreciate your advice.
Many thanks,
Tim, Bristol, UK.

I've never picked any this early - I've always been told that the earlier you pick them, the sourer they are.
But since you're going to add sugar anyway, and you have the advantage of a longer time to ripen the stuff, I wouldn't worry!

the only reason for delaying picking is to wait for the first frost they then have a blur hugh and are not so bitter
