I'll try to answer your question, but I'm afraid unless you like the show, you will continue to find it hard to understand.

Most people who love Star Trek don't dress up (at least not in publicsmiley - winkeye). It's those few that give trekkies/trekkers a freakish name. Some strange individuals get right into it and learn Klingon (which is an actual- if made up- language). They discuss all sorts of weird stuff, (like for instance I once overheard a discussion where one person asked, "If the Vulcans are such logical people, why is their written language so complicated?"smiley - weird) and forget it's not actually real.

Most of us just love the story lines, the characters, the history, etc. You could waste hours going through it all. It can be thought provoking, funny, sad all the things you might like about your favourite show. It clogs up my head with useless facts (fictions?) such as, Klingons have no tear-ducts! So much so that my brain has trouble remembering info that might be useful, but I still love it.

Star Trek has a long and involved history, even though it's all made up it's still fun. It gives those imaginative types among us a chance to glimpse what it could be like in the future. Who wouldn't want to go trekking across the universe aboard the Starship Enterprise along with Captain Kirk?

As an aside I'd like to know what people think of the new show 'Enterprise'. . .
