Hello,
This is a nice entry but talk about taking the romance out of things! The same could be said about the knights of the round table, robin hood and many other periods of history. I know that Truth is important so I'll leave it there - except to say well done on a thoroughly truthful - if uninspiring - entry.
Myriad.

this is true, but the main difference is that in the case of the wild west we have authentic historical accounts to compare with the myth. with king arthur we don't. here we can observe the growth of the myth. as it happens. (and there is overlap- hollywood was making westerns while butch and sundance were still robbing banks!) read bruce chatwin's "in patagonia", which touches on the last years of butch and sundance.

This does beg the question - who originated the storys of lawless towns and endless standoffs that became the Western movies we all know so well?
