A Conversation for Michael Palin - Writer, Actor and Traveller
Michael Palin's trip through Slovakia

The 7th episode was the last part of his "travel through the New Europe", and it was a poor report about Slovakia. I am from Netherlands, and I was many times in beautiful Slovakia. Interested as I was to watch the 7th episode about Slovakia I waited for this one hour long programm on tv. One hour? Yes, but only 5 minutes about Slovakia. During this 5 minutes I saw how villagers slaughter a pig, and how they drink a borovicka after. Like there is nothing more in this great country than villagers and drunks. At the end of this poor report he went by train to Czech republic. I have always been a fan of Michael. He is a gentleman with a great sense of humour, but in this "portrait" of Slovakia he offended many people in and out of Slovakia. I was totally shocked, it was unreal.
Yesterday I was in a bookshop, and I saw his book about the "new European countries". It is a rather big book. Of course I looked how he presented Slovakia in this book. Three pages: a few pictures and his story about how to slaughter a pig, how to make sausages, and how to drink borovicka. Oh, there was more: in one sentence he wrote how he went to the Czech republic. Michael Palin a gentleman? After this insult not for me anymore. I am angry and disappointed. I hope that the BBC will apologize by making a real portrait of Slovakia, presented by . . . Michael Palin. I think that he can do it if he shows that there is much more than slaughtering pigs and drinking borovicka.
