(1) Spider Repellant: Conkers contain the alkaloid/saponin compound, aescin, which, apparantly, is poisonous to most animals. Some mammals, notavbly deer, are able to break down the toxin and eat them safely.
The alkaloid is released when the conker is pierced, and spiders are thought to avoid it
(2)_ Varicose veinbs: Aescin has anti-inflammatory properties and is used to treat varicose veins and boost circulation.
