My take on "memory"

when i was a kid, i used to think of memory as a library inside our brains with books being specific memories. this analogy is not completely incorrect, but it's a bit misleading. the neural correlates of memory are as follows:
Memories are probably more like specific "ghost" patterns of previous specific neural activations that occurred [and, thus, correlated] with past experiences. the residues of these patterns remain... like imprints [neural structural and neurochemical changes allow this], some more immutable than others...when something leads to re-activation of these patterns, 
then we experience "memories"...

ps: These patterns that correlate with memories are widely distributed throughout our neural networks. that is why the analogy of discrete books in a library is misleading.
