A Conversation for Evariste Galois - Mathematical Genius
Roots of Quintic

Actually, Abel had shown a few years before Galois that the Quintic is not generally soluble in radicals. His proof wasn't as neat as Galois' though, because it was sort of an isolated thing, and not linked to a larger body of theory like Galois'. All of this, IIRC, of course.
Abel also died prematurely and miserably, shortly after completing his proof. Young mathematicians - stay away from that Quintic!
