De sade often thought of as a monster wrote startlingly good literature, if you take out the "nasty" side.
It may be said that his status enabled him to dare.
Attending a lecure on sadomasochism and bdsm the lecturer quite bluntly said that anyone studying this subject at university immediatly becomes "suspect" and most loose their tenure after a while.
This side is in all of us - what a shame there are so few who understand.
