Anno Domini

Has anyone noticed that after writing "Those who do know what the letters mean will realise that the letters properly go before a date, not after it" at the very beginning of this article, dates are written "1 AD", "2 AD" and "2000 AD" later on in the article? Errr, what's going on here?

Hi Researcher 206236,

welcome to h2g2! I've noticed that this is your first posting here. smiley - biggrin Thanks for reading the entry and actually commenting on it. smiley - smiley

What you've noticed is explained later in the text, in one of the footnotes: Given the translation of 'Anno Domini', the abbrevation 'AD 2000' would indeed be correct, rather than '2000 AD'. But, in written English and also on h2g2 it is customary to use the 'wrong' format, that's the reason.
