A Conversation for The Christmas Star

the bible says that satan can transform himself into an angel of light in other words he can appear or do something that seems benifical.
So was the star at the birth of Jesus really benifical?
Was it really from God?

Well if it was it would seem that his right hand did not know what his left hand was doing, for after the astroligers visited herod and then saw Jesus, God sent an angel to Joseph and Mary to tell them to flee and not go back to herod.

Why would God send a sign that would bring the astrolegers straight to Jesus's enemy Herod a man who wanted to kill him.

God sent the angels to the shepards but the devil sent the star to the astrolegers to lead them to the one who wanted to kill Jesus.

also astroligey was forbidden by God (deutormany chapter 18 in the bible) so would God forbid a certin pratice and then send a sign to those practing what He forbid and then use them to bring Jesus's birth to herord's attention so that he could try an kill him and then God had to step in again and send an angel to warn them to flee and in the meantime herod so loses it that he slaughters all the male children under two years of age which would make God directly responsaible for their death does that make sense well it doesn't to me i expect God to be clued in and dependable and differant from the blood thirsty gods of the so called pagan nations

here are some full stops and capital letters and put them in where you see fit

The theory of Free Will says that God was not responsible for Herod's actions, because Herod was responsible for them himself.

But I wouldn't worry if you find a few contradictions in the Bible; it's full of them. My favourite story from the Bible is the one where a prophet was going along a road and some small boys called out to him "Hey Baldy!". He cursed them and an angry she-bear came out of the woods and ate them.smiley - biggrin

i was not suggestiong that God was responsiable for herod's actions but if God sent the star then He would be wouldn't He withregard to Elijah and the she bear these were israelite children and the whole nation was in a dedicated realtionship with God and they would have known that Elijah was a prophet of God to the nation and mocking him as they did was the same as mocking God it was gross disrepect for God and His repesentive and they thus suppered the penelty or as Paul put it do not be misled God is not one to be mocked

Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

An eye for an eye.
Turn the other cheek.

these are not contriductions the first two are direct commands from God to His people

Exd 20:13 `Thou dost not murder.
Exd 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.

taken from two differant translations

Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

Deu 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

Deu 18:12 For all that do these things [are] an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

Deu 18:13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.

9"When you arrive in the land the LORD your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there.10For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling or sorcery, or allow them to interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft,11or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead.12Anyone who does these things is an object of horror and disgust to the LORD. It is because the other nations have done these things that the LORD your God will drive them out ahead of you.13You must be blameless before the LORD your God.14The people you are about to displace consult with sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the LORD your God forbids you to do such things.

again from two different translations the canninates the people who inhabited the land that God's people were going into were so deprived that God was executing judgment against them and they were to be put to death as a judgment of God who sees all however thou shall not kill was a direct command to the nation of israel once they had settled down and inhabited the land after carrying out God's judgment and future generations were to obey this law which was a part of the national law as for an eye for an eye

Exd 21:24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

Exd 21:25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

24If an eye is injured, injure the eye of the person who did it. If a tooth gets knocked out, knock out the tooth of the person who did it. Similarly, the payment must be hand for hand, foot for foot,25burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise

again two differant translations this is part of the national code that God gave them and which was taught to them reguraly by the priests and levites and prophets as well as in the home by the parents and familarity with the law code would impress upon them the conseqcues of disobeying God's law it was not to be done lightly it helped them be better people differant from the nations around them as for turn the other cheek these are the words of Jesus and the suituion is changed in that the law coveant was only for the israelits but Jesus's words are for all mankind and he meant that when someone slaps you on the cheek it is not a fatal wound it is just meant to embarras you to taunt you into a responce and so Jesus said well do not respond simply turn the other cheek in other words walk away so as you may see from all of this when you take the context of the scripture into account they really are not contriductions at all and often there are litterly thousands of years between differant accounts as is the case when the israelits got the law and Jesus said his sayings

And you don't see those as contradictions?

no and if you do then please explain how they are

Gnomon - time to move on

I consider it a contradiction for God to say "do not kill" and also to say "kill all witches". I consider it a contradiction to say "if somebody wrongs you, you should get them back" and "if somebody wrongs you, you should not get them back".

To me it looks as if the New Testament is a very different religion which is tacked onto the Old Testament and goes against much of what it says. I can see why people might believe in one, but I can't understand why people insist they believe in both.

No it was the man who control the universe and his cat God, out on a Sunday trip. They stopped by the earth because they heard that we make good hamburgers.
