A Conversation for Coin Collecting

King of Hobbies

I was interested in the idea of coin collecting as the 'King of Hobbies'. This can be conveniently be turned on its head as the 'Hobby of Kings' since it is a) historically accurate in terms of its origins, b) Kings have a lot of money and c) Kings usually appear on coins.

Hi! Sorry it took me a while to get back to you.

Yes, that is true- coin collecting was considered the domain of the aristocracy for a long time because they were the only ones who could afford to do it. Unfortunately, the opinion that coin collecting is a rich man's hobby continues. It doesn't have to be: in fact, I listed my website as one of the resources since it's built around the idea of tailoring the hobby to your budget.

As for so many coins having kings/queens/heads of state on them: *sigh* Indeed! Sometimes this isn't so bad since the portraits are detailed and the reverse is interesting enough to compensate for the repetition (for example, British coins). However, some of them can be very bland (I'm thinking of the Netherlands in particular- no offense to our Dutch H2G2 members, the coins are just not very interesting).

hi peeps,
Wonder if anyone has information as to where I can get my coin collection valued, I have an extensive collection well over a hundred mainly british coins including ancient coins...I'm looking for a reputable auction house, or somewhere I don't have to go to the ends of the earth to find.

cheers
colin
