Wombles

One of my kids told me that when they were little they had never heard of a place called Wimbledon Common, but they knew the line of the song, 'The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.' They always assumed this referred to a family called The Wombles of Wimbledon, and that there must be a lot of them around everywhere, which was puzzling because they never met any. The discovery, many years later, that somewhere called Wimbledon Common actually exists, completely eclipsed anything they may have discovered about Santa or the Tooth Fairy.

I feel the same way - I used to watch The Wombles when I was very young (too many years now to recall!) I could never quite make out where the Wombles were from by the theme song, and just assumed that it was a made-up place. How exciting that it actually exists!

Next time I visit London, I will have to visit the Common and keep my eyes peeled...
