Just learned from watching 'Countryfile' (BBC1)that the Moonraking legend is not uniqueto Wiltshire. The YUorkshire town of Slaithwaite has an almost identical legend (but dating back only to the 19th Century) in which the 'moonshine' smugglers ditched their contraband into a canal:
