According to the dardening correspondent, Chris Beardshaw, writing in today's Daily Mail, the earliest recorded hedge-planting took place in Wiltshire in 940AD.
However excavations of Bronze Age sites in Cornwall have revealed possibly the earliest hedges in the UK, where earth and stones dug from underground chambers was piled in lines and planted with native trees
