This sounds more complicated than the theory proposed by the older woman to the philosophy professor. She said she knew what held the universe up. "It's riding on the back of a turtle." The prof asked "What holds the turtle up?" "It's riding on the back of another turtle." When the prof started to ask another question, she held up her hand and said, "It's turtles all the way down, sonny."

This is one of my favorite anecdotes. The gentleman in question was a Huxley, and the occasion was a lecture at the Royal something or other of Science in the early teens of the last century.

Or maybe Pratchett?
From a quick Google search: "Who is Terry Pratchett? What sort of person writes about a circular world on the back of a giant star turtle supported by four elephants?"
